A Drama in Two Acts (Mature Themes)
The unvarnished tale of Sleeping Beauty is dark and riveting. We all know the tale of how Sleeping Beauty is cursed to sleep one hundred years to be awaken with a kiss. But Grimm’s original tale told more. The wise-woman who cursed the princess, waited until the perfect time, charmed herself into a different form, married a king and gave birth to a prince. Then she raised him with stories of what she saw as injustices done to her, of abuses piled upon her, and of his duty to avenge her. Then at the right moment, she set him on his path to the princess. Meanwhile when the princess fell asleep, so did the entire kingdom and inside of it was also her betrothed, a young prince that she was already beginning to care about – he slept too. When the dark prince arrived, he woke her – but not just with a kiss…when she became fully awake and realized that her dress was torn, he told her that he had heard screaming and had rushed in to save her. And thus the conflict begins. Which prince to choose – her betrothed, now awake like the rest of the castle, or the dark prince, who appears to all to have been her savior?
